UNIVERSITY ADMISSIONS
The goal of this week-long service design intensive, was to observe the things that build up a positive admissions experience, and to figure out what would guarantee the Savannah College of Art and Design a #1 position and make it a trendsetter among other universities.

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2673096/IMG_6954.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="446" width_o="1000" height_o="667" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2673096/IMG_6954_o.jpg" align="left" />

A First Impression
The application process is crucial in defining people’s perception of the school. Thus, the opportunity was to create a unique experience that would build emotional attachment to the school and accurately represent the high quality education that the school provides.

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2673096/Screen Shot 2012-02-17 at 3.40.22 PM.png" border="0" width="670" height="445" width_o="1405" height_o="934" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2673096/Screen Shot 2012-02-17 at 3.40.22 PM_o.png" align="left" />

Research
Ethnographic research, secondary research and competitor analysis.

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2673096/SCAD-admissions2.png" border="0" width="670" height="288" width_o="670" height_o="288" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2673096/SCAD-admissions2_o.png" align="left" />
Ethnographic research included going undercover using the "secret shopper" technique, attending the information sessions and tours.

During this time, special attention was given to peoples' body language and we were especially attentive to emotional fluctuation, to understand how people were feeling throughout the day. Observations were followed by interviews of various potential students and their families.

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2673096/SCAD-admissions1.png" border="0" width="670" height="553" width_o="670" height_o="553" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2673096/SCAD-admissions1_o.png" align="left" />

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2673096/SCAD-admissions6.png" border="0" width="670" height="288" width_o="670" height_o="288" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2673096/SCAD-admissions6_o.png" align="left" />

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2673096/SCAD-admissions3.png" border="0" width="670" height="415" width_o="670" height_o="415" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2673096/SCAD-admissions3_o.png" align="left" />

Opportunities & Insights
<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2673096/SCAD-admissions4.png" border="0" width="670" height="226" width_o="670" height_o="226" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2673096/SCAD-admissions4_o.png" align="left" />
We presented SCAD with various opportunities to improve and enhance their incoming student applications and admissions process. Using an A, B, C, Q framework helped categorize the the opportunities according to their level of commitment, effort, and time required for implementation.

By exploring a wide range of opportunities, SCAD could develop significant differentiation from its competitors by offering a first class admissions experience to all potential students.

MOBILE SERVICES: REINVIGORATED
Visit the Project site.

This project was created within the new Service Design B.F.A. program at SCAD and summarizes the collective work of eleven undergraduate service and industrial design students. We chose AT&T as the subject for our research and continued to create new service strategies and touchpoints under their brand name.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/258579/banner1.png" border="0" width="670" height="138" width_o="670" height_o="138" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/258579/banner1_o.png" align="left" />

The goal of this project was to holistically re-imagine the service that a mobile voice and data provider offers to its customers. To achieve this, we went through a process of research, synthesis, exploration and concept development that focused on the experiences associated with being an AT&T subscriber.

COFFEE BREAK
Coffee Break is a book that was the result of a project focused on observing the current state of how materials are being used in manufacturing. The research conducted covered the most current issues in the world of material manufacture, as well as use and disposal.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/1130302/IMG_2756.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="446" width_o="2048" height_o="1363" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/1130302/IMG_2756_o.jpg" align="left" />

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/1130302/salton-1.png" border="0" width="221" height="225" width_o="221" height_o="225" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/1130302/salton-1_o.png" align="left" /> The protagonist in the story is the "Salton Three For All Plus EX-30" espresso and coffee machine. This particular counter-top appliance was found in a thrift store and it was no longer in working condition. Working with two teammates, we disassembled it piece by piece until the only things left were little piles of scraps, carefully sorted by material. Glass, metals and plastics all make an appearance on the table, and each individual material is weighed and analyzed.

The materials were observed from macro to micro perspectives, as were their properties, and their transformation from raw material trough to the life cycle of the product.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/1130302/IMG_2470.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="446" width_o="2000" height_o="1333" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/1130302/IMG_2470_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/1130302/IMG_2472.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="446" width_o="2000" height_o="1333" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/1130302/IMG_2472_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/1130302/IMG_2471.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="446" width_o="2000" height_o="1333" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/1130302/IMG_2471_o.jpg" align="left" />

By meticulously dismantling this coffee maker, it helped draw some conclusions on the current state of mass manufactured products. It is clear that despite individual attempts to design increasingly sustainable products, most decisions are made with financial intent, irrespective of the impact or repercussions of the manufactured product.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/1130302/big-picture2.png" border="0" width="670" height="478" width_o="670" height_o="478" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/1130302/big-picture2_o.png" align="left" />

After the different materials in a product have served their purpose, it is up to the (often uneducated) end user to decide where they will end up. Even if the last person to own the coffee maker was passionate about disposing of it properly, they would be required to disassemble a product that was not created with the capability to be taken apart. Even taken apart, most materials (especially plastics) lack the proper marking and indications the be appropriately sorted.

The best solution would be for the product creators to assume this responsibility.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/1130302/IMG_2179.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="446" width_o="2000" height_o="1333" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/1130302/IMG_2179_o.jpg" align="left" />

The book helps bring the reality and impacts of mass manufacture into perspective, with hopes that this awareness can make a difference.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/1130302/IMG_2138.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="444" width_o="2048" height_o="1360" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/1130302/IMG_2138_o.jpg" align="left" />

KHAMTI JALA
Khamti Jala is an initiative to bring arsenic free water to people in Bangladesh using the electrocoagulation process.

The system consists of a multiple phase process for filtration and purification. These phases are essential in producing water that is free of arsenic as well and many other pathogens, viruses and bacteria that are the causes for many diseases.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2289083/3step-process.png" border="0" width="670" height="391" width_o="855" height_o="499" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2289083/3step-process_o.png" align="left" />

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2289083/basic-system.png" border="0" width="670" height="682" width_o="670" height_o="682" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2289083/basic-system_o.png" align="left" />

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2289083/arsenic2.png" border="0" width="670" height="748" width_o="670" height_o="748" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2289083/arsenic2_o.png" align="left" />

Arsenic is a chemical element that is known for being a poisonous metalloid with many allotropic forms. Several of these metalloidal forms are found free in nature, and have been getting increasing amounts of attention, due to significantly dangerous health effects.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2289083/Bangladesh.png" border="0" width="670" height="457" width_o="670" height_o="457" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2289083/Bangladesh_o.png" align="left" />
In Bangladesh, arsenic contamination is finally getting recognized as a significant issue. Organizations such as UNICEF and World Bank are continually putting effort into helping those who are victims of the contamination. Several attempts to reduce drinking water contamination have been attempted, but this is proving to be very difficult.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2289083/numbers.png" border="0" width="670" height="165" width_o="670" height_o="165" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2289083/numbers_o.png" align="left" />

For a long time, Bangladesh has suffered from contaminated groundwater. Ineffective water purification systems, along with periodic monsoons and flooding only make the situation worse. An attemp was made by UNICEF and the World Bank to drill tubewells to tap into deeper groundwater. While reducing the contamination, this solution does not completely solve the main heath issue: arsenic.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2289083/bangladesh-photos2.png" border="0" width="670" height="191" width_o="670" height_o="191" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2289083/bangladesh-photos2_o.png" align="left" />

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2289083/ststem-overview.png" border="0" width="670" height="861" width_o="670" height_o="861" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2289083/ststem-overview_o.png" align="left" />
Phase 1: Electrocoagulation
When water is poured into the first recipient, the water undergoes an electrocoagulation process. This is an electrochemical treatment technique which consists in passing electric current through two electrodes, releasing gas which shows how much iron has been released to clot with the arsenic.

Once the electrocoagulation has taken place, and the arsenic has bound to the iron (creating an iron-arsenic compound), the water can be released the the next phase: the sand filter.

Phase 2a: Sand Filter
Sand filters are the most accessible and simplest form of filtration. Slow sand filters in particular are highly efficient in removing very small particles and organisms from the water.

Phase 2b: Bio-Sand Filter
Bio-sand filters are also very accessible and simple forms of filtration. Due to the slower nature of the filtration a bio-film is created on the surface of the sand bed, which is extremely efficient in removing even the smallest of particles. The main benefits of the biological activity is the elimination of various bacteria, viruses, and pathogens.

Phase 3: Storage & Distribution
The fourth recipient serves as a storage and distribution container. It will hold the filtered water, and is equipped with a spout that will allow for easy pouring into and other container. There is a lid covering the top to prevent any volatile organisms or dust from entering the clean water.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2289083/exploded-view.png" border="0" width="670" height="737" width_o="670" height_o="737" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2289083/exploded-view_o.png" align="left" />

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2289083/TESTing.png" border="0" width="670" height="785" width_o="670" height_o="785" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2289083/TESTing_o.png" align="left" />

A full scale prototype was developed to observe flow rates, and to get a general idea of how the device will operate.

Clear acrylic was used so that each phase can easily be identified and the water flow can be followed. The prototype is not an actual representation of the design, but clearly displays the layout of the containers and their relationship to one another.

Some of the next stages in this project include:
- Understanding and engaging the local industries and manufacturing facilities in Bangladesh
- Creating a system where maintenance is not the user’s responsibility
- Being aware about how the design can fit into various service/system models
- Setting up commerce models that locals can take over

KABERSEMAAN INDONESIA
Kabersemaan is an approach to empower the BOP (Base of the Pyramid) in Indonesia, by providing them with an affordable and reliable method of modern domestic and international communication. (project completed in March 2008)

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2212328/indonesia-islands.png" border="0" width="670" height="333" width_o="944" height_o="470" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2212328/indonesia-islands_o.png" align="left" />

In today's world, it's becoming increasingly difficult to carry out business without using established methods of communication. It is especially difficult in Indonesia since the population is spread out over many different islands.

Who are the other 90%?

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2212328/BOP-pyramid.png" border="0" width="670" height="517" width_o="838" height_o="647" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2212328/BOP-pyramid_o.png" align="left" />

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2212328/conventional.png" border="0" width="422" height="394" width_o="422" height_o="394" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2212328/conventional_o.png" align="left" /> Indonesia has a satellite communication infrastructure in place (LAPAN), but it is expensive to use. Currently, there are call centers in place, where villagers can visit in order to satisfy their communication needs. The USO (Universal Service Obligation) Program makes satellite communication accessible to 72,000 villages, but 43,000 are still left unserved.

The digital divide:
Penetration of mobile and telephone lines reaches only 10.45% of population due to geographical issues and an uneven spread of population.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2212328/digital-infrastructure.png" border="0" width="670" height="641" width_o="717" height_o="686" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/20818/2212328/digital-infrastructure_o.png" align="left" />
The infrastructure above ground is susceptible to natural disaster degradation and existing public call centers are difficult to maintain for the government.

"Not only can we serve the poor, but we can also extract the fortune at the bottom of the pyramid."
-C.K. Prahalad

In the proposed system, multi-national companies (MNCs) micro-finance the equipment and train the local women who in turn, will become distributors. As distributors, the women supply network connectivity to other local citizens.

This model makes the woman a change agent for the villagers. The MNCs pay commission for the client in addition to paying her to train others in self-help groups.

As the network grows, more people become connected, locally and long-distance. The micro-finance system gives the woman a sense of ownership, which is an incentive for her to stay up to date on maintenance.

This camping utensil set was designed to be easily transportable and usable in the outdoors.

Much ergonomic consideration was taken during the design process of the utensil handle. After testing a multitude of forms on a wide variety of users from the target market, universal design principles were applied to make a utensil usable by everyone.

AXIS TREKKING STICK
Every year thousands of people, from enthusiasts to amateurs, suffer from outdoor recreational injuries. The fact that there are people dying of potentially curable injuries due to lack of access to medical care has inspired the development of this project.

Axis is an innovative trekking pole that can be transformed into a crutch, in the event of lower body injuries. Rather than burdening a user with an extra tool, axis brings together a trekking pole and crutch. This design gives the user a chance to reach medical attention and safety while hiking in remote areas.
